How It Works

Barrel Breathing

A barrel is more than a container; it is an active part of the aging process.

As temperature and pressure shift, spirit moves through the wood, drawing out color, aroma, and flavor while slow oxygen exposure helps shape texture and character over time.

Bare Wood’s patented design brings a controlled version of that interaction into the bottle.

Our cork integrates a wooden stave that extends into the spirit and connects to the bottle’s airspace. When the cap is removed, the stave is exposed to air, allowing the spirit to breathe through the wood in a way traditional bottles cannot.

It is a simple idea with a complex result: wood, air, spirit, and time working together inside the bottle.

Barrel Principles, In A Bottle

The relationship between wood and liquid is central to aging.

Smaller barrels often influence spirits more quickly because they provide more wood surface area relative to the volume of spirit inside. More contact means more opportunity for extraction, color development, and flavor change.

Bare Wood uses this principle at bottle scale.

Our stave is sized to create meaningful wood contact within a 750ml bottle, allowing the spirit to continue interacting with the wood after bottling.

The effect depends on the spirit, proof, wood species, toast, char, finish, temperature, and time — but the purpose remains the same: to give the spirit a living relationship with wood, rather than locking it away in glass.

The Bare Wood Advantage

Genuine Aging

Without the wood being exposed to air, other methods are limited merely flavoring their spirits, not aging.

The longer our spirits stay in the bottle, the more they improve, just like in a barrel.

Wood Variety

Barrels can’t be be made of just any wood because most would leak, but our design doesn’t have to worry about leaking.

This makes for endless possibilities... Oak, maple, hickory, cherry, and many more!

Fine-Tuned Control

Each bottle comes covered with a resealable collectable cap.

Remove the cap to expose the wood to the air and begin aging. Once it tastes just right, put the cap back on to stop the aging!
